The Ethnology and Archeology Museum of Lourinha (Portugal) calls for illustrations of dinosaurs and other extinct animals. The minimum admissible size is 148 x 210 mm (5.83 x 8.27 inches). There is no maximum size. Preference will be given to Illustrations of Portuguese species and/or Animals depicted as life-like appearance, set in their natural habitat. Exhibition and announcement of contest winners will be held in the museum.

The town of Maalot-Tarshiha (in the Galilee, Israel) is unique for its' harmonious coexistence of Arabs and Jews, sharing 7 quarters and one municipality. For the past eighteen years the Municipality of Maalot-Tarshiha has organized an annual International Sculpture Symposium known as “Stone in the Galilee.” The event hosts sculptors from Israel and all over the world, who stay at Maalot-Tarshiha for 20 days and sculpt open-air exhibits and sculptures out of local Galilee stone (dimensions up to size 2m3, with height not less than 1.2 meters). The upcoming “Stone in the Galilee” Symposium is planned for March 26th through april 14th 2009 and sculptors are invited to submit their proposals / sketches for sculptures to be executed at the Symposium. Proposals must relate to the theme : Urban Environmental Sculpting. Priority shall be granted to proposals incorporating materials other than stone, such as metal, wood, glass, etc. The information and forms can't be obtained from the municipality's website and are hereby attached

LICC invites passionate visual artists, regardless of experience or nationality, to submit their innovative artwork (single or series up of up to 5) for inclusion in the LICC competition. This year's categories are: Architectural, Audio/Music, Design (Environmental/ Fashion/ Graphic/ Interior), Drawing/Illustration, Installation, Mixed Media, NetArt/Web Design, Painting, Performance, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textile, Video and Film, Writing and Other. jury-selected finalists and shortlist will be published in the LICC Annual Awards Book, on the competition's website and will be announced to the creative arts and media outlets worldwide. The 15 finalists work will be presented at the LICC awards ceremony in London. (not to be followed by an exhibition). Early bird deadline: December 30th, 2008. Final deadline: January 31st, 2009. The deadline for submissions has been extended to April 26, 2009.

The Beppu (Japan) Biennale of Contemporary Art 2010 will take place Jan. 24 - Feb.23, 2010 at the Beppu Art Museum. Artists are invited to submit paintings (1 work per artist) which have not been displayed in any previous competitions. The minimum size of the work should be 91cm x 91cm, and the maximum size should be 162cm x 162cm. The total weight, including the frame, should not exceed 30kg. Please note: The 2nd Screening involves the examination of Actual Works (shipping at the roganisers' expense, although return expenses of unsold works are at the artist's expense).

The Villa Strauli, a residency program in Winterthur (Switzerland), aims to promote stimulating encounters between its artists in residence, the local cultural scene, and an interested general public. Two studios are awarded at the same time for long term residencies of 5 1/2 months in length; Another studio is granted upon application for shorter projects. The January 31st deadline refers to the Long-term studios residencies, beginning and ending: 15.01. - 29.06.10 or 02.07. - 15.12.10. Inquiries regrading the short term residencies may be made at any time, and should a studio be temporarily unoccupied, it can be awarded at the director’s discretion. Please note: An artist invited to participate in a studio residency is to try to obtain a grant in his/her native country to cover living and travel expenses. Should all requests be denied, an application for a contribution toward living costs may be made to the Sulzberg Foundation. (Copies of grant applications denied or an explanation as to why a grant cannot be provided in the artist’s native country are to be submitted to the Villa Sträuli with requests for financial assistance).

Each year approximately 25 artists are selected for a residency at the Rijksakademie (in Amsterdam, Netherlands). Admission is initially for a work period of one year (January to December). Whether a second year is considered worthwhile, will be decided by mutual agreement. Resident artists have usually successfully completed their studies and have worked independently as artists for a number of years prior to their application. Please note: Artists who successfully pass the first round of screening are invited for an interview in June at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

A Department of Public Works in Italy published a competition for artists regarding the selection, execution and acquisition of two works of art destined for the MAXXI, the National Museum of the Arts of the XXI Century, located in Rome. The competition is open to all those enjoying civil and political rights in their home state. Work No. 1 will be located in the atrium of the building’s principal entrance, a very large and prevalently vertical space. The work is to be installed in the upper part of the atrium, utilising where necessary the metal profiles provided on the lower edges of the roof beams, and must be suspended at least three metres above the floor of the ground floor. Work No. 2 is to be located in the external area, which comprises both open zones and others, covered by cantilevered portions of the building and has a maximum usable height of 5.5 metres. After the first stage selection, six artists/groups for each work shall be invited to present a model of the work of art. The expenses of those artists selected for the second phase of the competition who do not win the final prize shall be reimbursed to the gross sum of 5,000 Euros. Each competitor may participate individually or as part of a group with a single proposal for each of the two works.

The purpose of the Emerging Artist Program is to recognize and showcase the artwork of up and coming artists who wish to establish themselves in a professional visual arts career. Once selected, these artists are invited to participate in the Festival (Tampa, Florida, March 2009) at no cost. They will also be provided with the use of an individual display tent and receive an expense allowance. Artists must be present Applicants to the Emerging Artist Program should not have an established record as a professional artist showing their work in museums, art centers, major galleries or juried outdoor art exhibitions. In addition, applicants must not have more than 25% of their total annual income derived from the sale of their artwork and must not be licensed professionally as a visual artist. Each artist must submit three slides or digital images. The artwork shown on three slides/digital images must have been produced since 2006. Awards and checks will be presented to the winning artists in person at the awards ceremony on March 7 afternoon. An artist must be present to accept his or her award before 5 p.m. Sunday, March 8, or he or she will forfeit the award. The deadline for submissions has been extended to January 1st, 2009

Swing Space is a space grant program that connects artists and arts organizations with vacant commercial space downtown (New York City). Studio, rehearsal, office, installation, and exhibition space awards are typically for two to four months and are accompanied by a project stipend. Recommended projects will be in consideration for placement starting in May through October 2009. Applications are accepted from visual and performing artists, (with at least 3 years of professional experience), in 6 project categories: VISUAL ARTS - Development Space (typically 3 months)/ Presentation Space of new works (typically 4-6 weeks)/ Office Space for project-specific use (typically 4-6 months); PERFORMING ARTS - Development Space (typically 2-4 months)/ Presentation Space of new works (typically 4-6 weeks)/ Office Space for project-specific use (typically 4-6 months). Performing Arts Presentation Space projects should have at least three (3) scheduled performances, and all performances must be open to the general public. All stipends may not be applied toward the purchase of capital equipment such as computers or video cameras.

Liverpool (UK) Biennial is inviting proposals for a 3-month residency period that focuses on the interaction of art in local neighbourhoods particularly on the relation between imagination and a sense of place. The candidate will be based alongside residents in north of the city and conduct his/her project in a manner that recognises residents as the first audience. The outcome of the research/project will be presented as part of Urbanism 2009, a project initiated by Liverpool Biennial along the Leeds-Liverpool canal for September 2009.

The VoxBox project aims to bring together a selection of artists from a wide range of disciplines to remediate a single source material, and to place their results alongside one another in an exhibition. Selected artists will be provided a single audio source and will participate in making new work in response to this sound, using their chosen medium for public exhibition. The final artworks will be included in a group exhibition held in Spring 2009 in Plymouth, UK. The organisers provide exhibition venue, publicity, technical equipment for exhibition, and documentation.

The Kobe Biennale 2009 will take place in the city of Kobe Meriken Park area, (Japan), October 3, 2009 to November 23, 2009. The biennale will feature the 2nd “Art in a Container” International Competition. The artwork needs to be installed (and exhibited) in a container, sized: Length 12 meters, width 2.4 meters, height 2.5 meters. The theme of the Biennale this time around is "wa" (reconsidering the relationship between people and nature, and the power of "culture" within the context of the environment). All entries must be original works that have never been exhibited, either in Japan or overseas.

In 2009 Cove Park (in Cove, Scotland) will offer one three-month Scottish Arts Council (SAC) Visual Arts Residency. The residency will take place between 4 May and 31 July 2009 and national and international visual artists are welcome to apply. One aspect of the programme is to make new work and new ways of working available to a broader public. To achieve this the Visual Arts resident will be invited to take part in aspects of Cove Park’s public programme. EMAF will take place in Osnabrueck, Germany, April 2009. Submissions are accepted for film , installation or expanded media. Only film and video contributions realized after 1st December 2007 are applicable. Concepts for installations and other projects should also have been realized after this date. In particular circumstances, exceptions can be made. A maximum of three works per author can be entered for the film and video competition in the film-formats 16mm and 35 mm (projections with separate sound are not possible). For installations, performances and other projects, a cost-calculation, as well as a detailed description, photos and if available a video documentation must be provided. The deadline for submissions has been extended to January 5th, 2009.

The Artists' Residency Programme studios at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (in Dublin, Ireland) are programmed approximately a year in advance. Artists of all media can apply, (including Painting, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Installation, Photography, Performance, Video/Film and Printmaking), with a full proposal for a programme of work. Residencies are set on an average of a two to four month duration within the six month programming period, however a maximum of six months can also be proposed.

The Arts Area of the Town Hall of Madrid, (Spain) through its project at Matadero Madrid, wishes to support initiatives destined to the promotion of artistic creation and modern thought and strengthen its dissemination and proximity to the public. For this call, the total available funds are 355,000 euros, distributed in three programmes: A) Programme for spaces and independent cultural agents, who run permanent spaces (open to the public) in Madrid, or who are devoted to the scheduling, organisation and promotion of activities in Madrid. The grants will consist of funding and/or assessment & support of an administrative and institutional nature. B) Creators’ Programme for the production of works by individual and group creators, innovative projects and activities, to be realized/completed in Madrid. The grants under this programme will consist of funding and/or assessment and support of an administrative and institutional nature. C) Matadero Madrid Programme for projects and/or activities which must be developed in one of the specific Madrid-based spaces and institutions, listed on the website. The programme schedule for the spaces will be adjusted in each case through a dialogue between applicants and the institution where the project is to take place. The projects may receive financial support space for the production and exhibition of their project, and assessment and support of an administrative and institutional nature. All projects must be submitted in Spanish.

Artists are invited to submit entries for pre-selection in the thirteenth annual Sculpture by the Sea to be staged along the coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama in Sydney, Australia from 29 October – 15 November, 2009. All types, forms and sizes of sculpture in all materials are eligible for entry. Sites are available along the coastal walk from Tamarama Park to the steps at the end of Notts Avenue, including Tamarama Beach and Café; rock platforms; garden beds; cliff tops; the park areas at Tamarama and Marks Park; and the sea. Special encouragement will be given to proposals for ephemeral and site specific works. Material Sponsorship is available for selected artists who wish to use aluminium, plasma or oxycut sheet metal and scrap metal. Each artist may submit up to 3 works.
